Supervision of Lunch and Recess
A CPS Waters school staff member is assigned to lunch and recess duty daily in addition to parent volunteers. Parent volunteers are always appreciated to help at this time.

Procedures for Lunch Room Volunteers
We would like to offer our thanks to the many parent volunteers who have come in to help during the lunch period.  We have over 600 students moving through the cafeteria during a two-hour period!  It is critical that every person in the room is there to help the students.  Unfortunately, because it is crowded and hectic we can no longer allow parents to bring in younger siblings during the lunch period.

Lunch Room Guidelines:
  • Sign in at the main office, get a volunteer badge
  • Let the staff person on duty know you are there (See the schedule hanging on wall in lunch room to see who is on duty that day)
  • Help students find their seats
  • Help students open their items
  • Answer raised hands.  Students must raise their hand to use the bathroom, or get a drink of water or straw.  Students must remain in lunch room.   Students should not leave their seats until given permission (especially the younger ones tend to get up to ask a questions, encourage them to raise their hands)
  • Help manage the recycle/compost line and move the kids through it quickly
  • Assist the children in lining up for recess or to go back to the classroom
  • Wash your hands and do it again!
  • Sign out and return your volunteer badge
  • Please keep in mind that some children respond more favorably to people they don’t know than others do.  Please be patient with the students and meet them where they are.
  • Remind them they are there to eat their lunch.  Try to encourage them to stay in their seats and finish eating.  Assist them with opening containers and disposing of garbage and recycling.  Remind them where to line up.
  • Each day, a staff member will be in the cafeteria to answer your questions about logistics.  Please respect that they are on site every week, they know the routines and the children know them.  They are the experts on expectations and behavior.  If you are having difficulty with a student, simply take their name and report to a staff member.  If you are not sure about something, please ask the staff member about it.  And, thank you for volunteering!

Procedures for Recess Volunteers
We would like to offer our thanks to the many parent volunteers who have come in to help during the recess period.  We have over 600 coming out to play on the field or on our jungle gyms during a two-hour period!  It is critical that every person in the room is there to help the students and ensure their safety.  Unfortunately, because it is crowded and hectic we can no longer allow parents to bring in younger siblings during the recess period.

Recess Guidelines:
Main Field Recess: (1st-8th grades)
  • Sign in at the main office (unless you’ve already signed in for lunch supervision)
  • Let the staff person on the field know you are there and ask where they would like you – please remain standing, so children know you are there to monitor and help
  • Students must stay on the field.  No playing in the gardens or moving towards the North Campbell doors.
  • Playing with balls is OK.  Throwing balls at a person is not OK.
  • No pushing, fighting, hitting or piling on each other.
  • It is helpful to have a volunteer at the main gates (where buses pick up/drop off) to ensure children stay on campus
  • After recess, please return your badge to office and sign out

Kindergarten Recess:
  • Sign in at the main office
  • Let the staff person know you are there to help
  • Please walk around and make sure the children are using equipment safely
  • No pushing, pulling on others, fighting, hitting or piling on each other, playing with sticks and/or causing harm to the plants.
  • Encourage children to take turns on the equipment and not crowd one another (i.e. one at a time going down the slide, no going up the slide)
  • Help the staff people line up the children for lunch
  • If requested, assist staff people in getting children in to the lunchroom and/or passing out lunch and milk tickets
  • Return your volunteer badge to the office and sign out
  • Please keep in mind that some children respond more favorably to people they don’t know than others do.  Please be patient with the students and meet them where they are.
  • Remind them they are there to play nicely and have fun.
  • Each day, a staff member will be on recess duty to answer your questions about logistics.  Please respect that they are on site every week, they know the routines and the children know them.  They are the experts on expectations and behavior.  If you are having difficulty with a student, simply take their name and report to a staff member.  If you are not sure about something, please ask the staff member about it.  And, thank you for volunteering!
