Core Curriculum

The CPS core academic curriculum includes Language Arts (Reading and Writing), Math, Science, and Social Studies. At Waters we strive to differentiate learning within each classroom so that students can feel comfortable yet be appropriately challenged with opportunities to grow. Central to Waters’ approach, the teachers take every opportunity to integrate across content areas and provide authentic hands-on learning experiences.

Language Arts
  • K-5th Grade
    • Amplify CKLA is our base Language Arts curriculum (reading and writing combined) for K-5
    • Wilson Fundations is used for students K-1 for Phonics & Phonemic Awareness
    • We are in our first year of using Skyline for Foundational Reading Skills (print concepts, phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics and word recognition, and fluency) grades 2nd-5th.

  • Savvas' MyPerspectives is the language arts curriculum for grades 6th - 8th.

Mathematics
  • For K-5, we use Illustrative Math

  • Connected Math is the base curriculum for grades 6-8, supplemented by pre-Algebra in 7th and Algebra in 8th (with an exit exam at the end of the school year for high school placement).

Science
  • Our K-8 scope and sequence science curriculum is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards, which teach science as both a body of knowledge and as a hands-on, evidence-based curriculum.
    • K-5th Classrooms use Foss as a base curriculum
    • 6-8th Grade Classes use SEPUP (Science Education for Public Understanding Program) as a base curriculum
    • The Environmental Science essentials class is integrated with the regular classroom science curriculum.

Social Studies
  • Our social studies curriculum is created so our students have the skills, knowledge and habits necessary to effectively contribute to their community.

The Pilot Light Food Education Standards have been developed, in collaboration with community and education stakeholders, to further the important mission of deploying and defining food education to schools throughout Chicago and beyond. The Food Education standards are integrated into our homerooms at Waters.

Important Message about Non-Discrimination at Waters:

Our school adheres to the CPS Comprehensive Non-Discrimination, Harassment, Sexual Harassment, Sexual Misconduct and Retaliation Policy, which outlines the District’s comprehensive approach to provide a safe working and learning environment at Waters and other schools across the city. This means that, at our school, we do not discriminate based on protected categories such as race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation, as well as others outlined in the policy.
