Here is just a glimpse of what they are up to.
The three Fine Arts teachers at Waters are a very innovative and passionate group who take art to a whole new level for elementary school students. They use the arts to express world culture and current events. They work closely with the classroom teachers to create projects that integrate subject matter from the students’ other classes. The Fine Arts are truly used as a learning tool as well as an enrichment program.
Arts integration is embraced in all curriculum areas and students perform curriculum based showcases throughout the year. An innovative, flexible schedule for the fine arts team allows for team teaching and project-based learning.
As part of Waters’ Fine Arts Program, the Visual Arts, Music and Drama programs at Waters are used as a model for other schools in Chicago. All are integrated with subject matter to provide a stimulating and holistic approach to learning. All Fine Arts classes, along with technology, are taught in a 1/2 class studio-based format (approx. 14:1).
This particular curriculum is rooted in the homeroom curriculum and aims to teach cultural studies and social activism through real-world experience and project-based activities.
Music is taught and integrated throughout the year with the student‘s curriculum. From Reading in Motion, where kids learn about letter sounds with their bodies, to learning the instruments of the ancient countries of trade on The Silk Road, Waters’ Music Program brings an extraordinary view of learning to the whole child.
The Waters drama teacher works with all students, K-8, to develop their self-confidence and self-expression skills and to encourage creative forms of expression at all ages. Projects range from Kindergarten music and movement classes to skits and full-scale plays for the older students.
