LETTER FROM PRINCIPAL CRESPO

Dear Parents,

Thank you to Mrs. Bricker and Mr. Raman for hosting our annual High School night this past Wednesday. It is never too soon to become familiar with the process of applying for high school. A representative from Amundsen shared information about the programs at our neighborhood high school. Did you know Amundsen is in the top 3 for the citywide International Baccalaureate (IB) program? Check out Amundsen – great initiatives are happening there – as you consider options for your child's high school.

This week is the final week to get your child's medical information turned in to your child's teacher. The deadline for medical exclusion is Friday, October 15. If you have made a doctor’s appointment, please email the appointment date to your child's teacher. You may also scan your forms and email to your child's teacher or fax to 773.534.5087. Please do not wait any longer or your child will not be able to return to school without current medical information on file.

I invite you to please join me at Coffee with Crespo next week!  It is the first one of the school year.  More details are included below.

 —Mrs. Crespo

HIGH SCHOOL ADMISSION INFO
Last week, Waters held its annual High School Information session for 6-8th grade students and families. We now have information on the high school admission and selection process, with links to relevant CPS pages and open house dates, on the Waters website.

HELP WATERS SUSTAIN THE ECOLOGY AND MUSIC PROGRAMS
Through the Annual Give to Waters fundraiser, we hope to raise enough money to support
the Ecology program, to enable a full-time Music program, to provide lunchtime/recess supervision, and so much more. The recommended pledge is $500 per family but please donate at any amount that best suits your family. Everyone can be a part of supporting our school, and every dollar makes a difference in the educational experience of our children. Donate today.

FALL SPORTS
3rd/4th Grade Girls Basketball Opportunity

Thursday, October 15
We are gauging interest for 3rd and 4th girls' basketball. In the past, Waters has had a 3/4 N.B.L. team (coached by Lori Roberts). This year we are able to have separate 3rd and 4th grade teams if there is enough interest and a 4th grade parent willing to volunteer to coach. Please contact Sandi Barlow if your daughter is interested in playing or if you are willing to coach 4th grade. The deadline for entering a team is Oct 15th.

Girls Volleyball
Tuesday, October 13 – Waters Gym 7/8 vs. West Ridge 4:30 p.m.
Thursday, October 15 – Waters Gym vs. Rogers 5/6 - 4:30 p.m., 7/8 - 5:30 p.m.
Last week the 7th/8th girls volleyball team played McPherson and Armstrong and won both games. The 5th/6th team beat McPherson and lost to Armstrong. Great work Wildcats! Come out to support the team at their games coming up this week.

Boys Soccer
Wednesday, October 14 – vs. West Ridge @ Lerner Field 7/8 - 4:30 p.m.
Friday, October 16 @ Rogers 5/6 - 4:30 p.m., 7/8 - 5:30 p.m.
Last week the 5th/6th boys soccer team played tough games against Armstrong and Hayt, losing each by only one goal. Come see the 7/8 team play this week against West Ridge at Lerner Field and both 5/6 and 7/8 teams play Friday at Rogers.

Parents can have their doctor's office fax the documents to 773.534.5087. If a doctor's appointment has set, please notify your child's teacher of the appointment date so we can note it in our system to remove the exclusion status. Find medical forms here.

FREE VISION SCREENING

CPS provides access to free vision exams for students. The CPS Vision Program will be visiting Waters School Friday, October 23. The program provides eye exams and glasses (if needed and if no insurance available) at no cost to the student. Parents please complete the form in English here and in Spanish here. Find out more here.

COFFEE WITH CRESPO

PAPEL PICADO AFTER-SCHOOL FAMILY WORKSHOP
Tuesday, October 27
Room 112B (Art room) – 3:30-5:00 p.m.
Families are invited to create handmade papel picado for our upcoming Día de lo Muertos Pop-Up Gallery and Parent Ofrenda. All students K-8 are invited to attend with their parents. This is a free art making activity. Papel picado is a traditional folk art from Mexico that involves cutting out intricate patterns on colorful tissue paper. The tissue paper is then mounted to a string in a line to form banners which are used as decorations for important festivities throughout the year. If you are interested in participating in the workshop, please email Mrs. Vecchioni.

DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS FINE ARTS PARENT WORKSHOP
Wednesday, October 28
10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Room 112B (Art Room)
Please join us and create sugar calaveras in celebration of Día de los Muertos. Some of our sweet creations will be featured during our upcoming annual Parent Ofrenda and pop-up Día de los Muertos exhibit. This community fine arts workshop is sponsored by the Waters School Parent Bilingual Advisory Council. Please email Mrs. Vecchioni to participate. Space limited to 15 persons.

ART MATERIALS NEEDED
The art room needs brown paper grocery bags for an upcoming Day of the Dead project. Please recycle your extra paper grocery bags with us. Grocery-sized paper bags can be dropped off in the art room or main office for the next two weeks. No plastic bags please. Thank you.

IS YOUR PARENT PORTAL ACCOUNT STUCK IN PENDING STATUS?
In order to properly activate your parent portal account – which allows you to track your child's progress at school - the personal information entered must exactly match (even the use of capital letters) with what the school has on file. If your account is still in pending status, please contact Mr. Gaytan in the school office to fix the data inconsistencies and activate the account.

SPRING SPORTS
5th Grade Boys’ Basketball – January 2016
We are looking for parent volunteers to coach the 5th grade boy’s basketball team in the Northside Basketball League. The games will run January through March. This team will be in addition to the Waters' CPS team. We have reserved a slot in the league but we need coaches. Interested? Please contact Steve Kibler.
