Book Fair Heroes: Hilary  and Beronica
This year’s Winter Scholastic Book Fair was a success, earning nearly $6,000 in Scholastic Dollars, which will be used to buy books and other supplies for Waters’ classrooms.

Thanks to the many volunteers who helped keep the Book Fair running smoothly, especially this year’s new organizers, Hilary Prosser and Beronica Rivadeneira-Mermuys. They are the stars of this month’s Volunteer Spotlight.

Hilary grew up in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. She and her husband, Bryce, moved into the neighborhood 10 years ago, and are parents to Mack, a Waters first grader, Hank (5), and Lucy (3).

Beronica was born in Chicago, then moved to Ecuador when she was five years old. She returned to Chicago at age 12, and attended middle school at Waters. She returned to Waters as a teacher to begin her career, and you can see her helping or subbing in some of our classrooms these days. Beronica and her husband Jeff Mermuys are parents to Matteo, a Waters Kindergartener.

Both Hilary and Beronica agree the Waters community is special, and they were impressed by our students during the Book Fair.

“I was touched by how kind, patient, and generous the students were to each other and to the volunteers,” Hilary says. “I saw students with smiles patiently waiting in long lines and handing over extra change so their friend could buy the book he or she wanted. Most importantly, I saw an enthusiasm for reading! I was proud, and felt great knowing my children will be surrounded by a caring, smart community day to day.”

Beronica adds, “How kind and thoughtful the kids were to one another during the book fair was great to witness.”

In their spare time, you can find Hilary and Beronica enjoying time with family and friends, and watching movies. Hilary has an interest in caring for Chicago’s homeless population, and she’s recently been volunteering with The Night Ministry. Beronica also loves to travel.

Thanks again, Hilary and Beronica, for your Herculean efforts organizing the Winter Book Fair. Look for their return this spring.
