Wine and Beer Fundraising Event
Thursday, March 31 – Bottles & Cans 7:00 p.m.

Join us this evening, at Bottles & Cans  (4109 N. Lincoln Ave.)  for a fun tasting event (with wine, whiskey, and beer). For everything you buy tonight, Waters will get 15% back in product for Big Night. You can also buy bottles of wine and beer at the event to donate for Big Night. Don't miss this fun neighborhood event: Think of it as a Big Night pre-party! No need to RSVP, just show up and we'll see you there.
And don't forget that Bottles & Cans, owned by a Waters neighborhood family, is giving Waters 10% back in product for Big Night for every purchase from now until April 30, as long as you mention you're with our school!

Science Assessment for Grades 5 and 8

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) is requiring an assessment for science in grades 5 and 8 that is aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). ISBE has released some of the science assessment information and has posted a FAQ and technical information.    
 
We have been diligent (with the support of WatersToday) in purchasing/upgrading our technology devices that will be adequate for students to access the assessment. This will be a required online assessment for 5th and 8th grades.

7th and 8th Grade PARCC Testing Change

PARCC Testing Update
7th and 8th Grade Math Test moved to week of April 11 

We noticed that our systems were rather slow today when students were trying to log in to begin PARCC testing. To lessen the potential for tech issues during testing,  7 - 8th graders will NOT be taking the PARCC Math unit test next week.  Instead, they will take the math unit test the week of April 11 on April 12, 14, and 15.  There will be 3 units of math.  

Order Your Popcorn for Tomorrow's Circus

First Grade Circus – Thursday, March 31 
Popcorn Orders Due – Room 111 8:15 a.m. 

Popcorn will be freshly popped tomorrow and delivered directly to classrooms.
It will not be available for purchase during lunch, only pre-orders.
Orders can still be placed tomorrow morning, but need to be brought directly to Mr. Rabiola in Room 111 at 8:15 a.m.!

Alternate Care for Children During  April 1 Day of Action


If parents are unable to secure alternate care for their child on Friday, April 1, they may sign up their child here to be cared for at a contingency site.

The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) leadership voted to go on strike this Friday, April 1, 2016. As we wrote to you last week: though there are teachers who have told us they will be in their classrooms on April 1, due to the undetermined number of staff absences occurring because of this one-day action, CPS will not be operating as we would on a regular school day...Read more.

Common Core Testing Update
This Week's PARCC Test Schedule

PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) will be administered in two segments, beginning with 3 units of English Language Arts (ELA) (up to 90 minutes per unit), followed by 4 units of Math (up to 60 minutes per unit)

The first set of  English Language Arts PARCC tests are happening this week for grades 3-4 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Grades 7-8 will take the online version of the ELA portion of the test on the same days Testing will begin 
at 8:45 a.m. and end at approximately 10:45 a.m.  Each day the students will take one unit of ELA.
Grades 3-4 will take the paper version of the test on March 29, 30, 31 (ELA) and April 11, 12, 14, and 15 (Math).  Grades 5-6 will take the online version of PARCC: ELA on April 5, 6 ,and 7 and Math on April  26, 27, 28 and 29. 

​The test will be administered in the morning, with make-ups in the afternoon. We ask that ALL students arrive on time to school at 8:15 a.m. Late arrivals will not be permitted entry into the homeroom and will have to make up their testing in the afternoon. Wednesday, March 30 – Annex 6:30 p.m.

Meet the candidates running for the Waters Local school Council (LSC) this Wednesday in the school annex. The slate includes eight candidates for parent representative,three candidates for community representative, two candidates for teacher representative, and one candidate for non-teacher staff representative. The election will take place at Waters on Wednesday, April 13, on parent-teacher conference day.

Community Meeting: Classroom Aides and Lunch, Recess Supervison 
Monday March 28 – Annex 6:30 p.m.

With an aim to plan ahead ahead for potential classroom aides next year, current Waters parents are organizing a community meeting to foster constructive feedback and productive discussions. Parents of any grade are welcome, including incoming kinder parents. Fundraising efforts, the need for aides and ideas for recess and lunch supervision will be discussed. Join us this Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the school annex. Please contact us with any questions.

Big Night Heart Block Painting
Saturday, April 2 – 4720 N. Campbell 9:00-11:00 a.m.
Due to unexpected circumstances Mr. Leki will be unavailable tomorrow, April 2 and we will NOT have access to the Annex. Therefore, block painting is moving down the street to 
Leah Welty-Rieger's house located at 4720 N. Campbell. All are welcome, see you there!

We invite Waters' families and the community to attend our final wooden heart block painting session. The heart blocks demonstrate our love for school, friends, teachers, neighborhood, family and Chicago. At Waters Big Night on April 30, the heart blocks will be displayed together in a giant art installation that you won't want to miss! It will be magical to see your child's artistic effort play a role in this incredible project. Every block will be available for purchase at $25 each and you may reserve your child's block. Please join us rain or shine, we want every child to have fun and paint a block or two!

Make Plans for Friday's Day of Action

Day of Action – Friday, April 1

Chicago Public Schools have issued a new letter encouraging families to make plans for Friday, April 1, the Day of Action by the Chicago Teacher's Union. Schools will not be in regular session, but there will be coordination with Chicago Park District and other locations for contingency plans for students. More specific information is expected Tuesday, March 29. Read the letter from CPS Chief Executive Officer Forest Claypool and CPS Chief Education Officer Janice K. Jackson.
