Detailed Impact of CPS Budget Cuts on Waters School

3/13/2016

The mid-year CPS cuts announced in February forced us to zero out our school’s operating expenses, directly impacting the daily operation of Waters School. These operating expenses that were cut include classroom supplies, instructional materials, substitute teachers, professional development, service contracts, and more.

We need substitutes when teachers are sick, during standardized testing, and when teachers take time out for professional development. Money is needed for general classroom supplies like photocopy paper and toner, dry erase markers, large paper easel pads, etc. We also need supplies for our specials like Visual Arts (thank you to all who donated to Mrs. Vecchioni’s DonorsChoose project).

Waters should be able to cover operating expenses for the remainder of this school year by using funds from our internal accounts (generated through student fees, facility rentals, etc.), a $10K donation from WatersToday, and leftover grant money from Mariano’s. It is unlikely that we will be able to buy textbooks and instructional materials for next year.

Since we anticipate more cuts for the upcoming 2016/2017 school year, we will be relying on student fees and community support more than ever. Please expect an increase in the student fee, which we will ask for in two installments: one at the end of this school year, and one in the fall.

Thank you for your continued support and advocacy. Every WatersToday donation, every volunteer hour, and every letter or phone call to local and state leaders makes a difference.

Please review slides from the budget presentation at last week's LSC meeting and for even more details and please review the additional impacts our school is facing given the state of the CPS budget, including the recently announced furlough days. If you have any questions, please drop me an email.

On another note, as the temperature begins to warm students will bicycle, skateboard, rip stick and hover board to school. Please be sure to lock your bicycle in the bike rack area or on a fence, upon arrival to school. Skateboards and rip sticks can be used to get to and from school but their use is not permitted on school property. I also strongly discourage the use of hover boards at our school. I worry about your child making it to school safely or sharing the hover board with another student who has never ridden one. Theft of the board is also a concern. Please speak to your child about bringing them to school. Hover boards are better left at home.
