Activities Ramping Up As Year Winds Down

Despite the rainy weathers, Waters Elementary had great representation at the Girls on the Run 5K downtown on Saturday morning. You may have seen these girls running around the block at Waters during the past two months getting ready for this big event. Not only does Girls on the Run promote being healthy through physical fitness, but also works with girls on building their self esteem and confidence. The girls were coached by Colleen Herman, Melissa Mendez, Jenny Perez, and Elizabeth Rangel.  A special shout out to Sandi Barlow, who is our site coordinator. The girls have been invited to wear their medals to school on Monday, so if you see Lara Aral, Cecelia Barlow, Madeline Herman, Mallory Herman, Sophie Kegler, Katie Kobak, Natayla Mendez, Delilah Perez, Malaina Rangel, Laelia van der Bijl, Reese Walter, or Addison Williams please tell them congratulations!

We are grateful that our 7th graders who went to Springfield and our 8th graders who went to Washington DC have all returned home safely this week. Thank you to Waters staff for giving of their personal time to accompany the students on these excellent learning experiences.

We have about a month to go before school closes on June 20. Please take note of the following upcoming activities:

• Volleyball, Track and Soccer wind down the end of the spring season with play off matches,  meets and games.

• Espresso with Crespo – Monday evening at 6:15 p.m.

• Our spring BOGO book fair kicks off this week!  It's a great deal and a great way to stock up on summer reading for your child.

• CAPE end of year events on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Please come out and support our students as they celebrate the end of their after school program. Waters works closely with Chicago Arts Partnership in Education to provide students with a free after school artistic learning experience. If you are interested in this opportunity for your child next year, this is a great way to see what students do and learn in this wonderful programs.

• GREASE is coming to you! Our students have been rehearsing for months and are very excited to share in a live musical performance. Please come this Thursday to see Waters students as they step back in time and light up the stage!

In June we look forward to the following:
8th grade luncheon – June 1
Walk a Thon – June 7
Field Day – June 9
Variety Show – June 13 and 14
8th grade Graduation – June 16
Kindergarten Celebration – June 20

Good evening!

This week I would like to recognize and thank those parent volunteers who went out of their way to make our staff feel loved and pampered. Staff was touched by all the thoughtful acts throughout the week. A big thank you to Andrea Goldstein, coordinator of teacher appreciation week, along with many more parents who worked so hard to make this past week so special. And thank you to all the parents who surprised their children's teachers with special gifts.

What a great evening of fun on Saturday at Big Night dancing to the Tommy Bradford Band jazz tunes and the Samba1 Brazilian Dance Group (featuring our very own Waters parent Ariel Barbick). I want to say thank you to WatersToday for organizing such a successful Big Night event on Saturday evening!

Keeping with the theme of teacher appreciation, please read about the impact of one of our very own teachers, Mrs. Ballasch had on a former Waters student. Thank you to all teachers and school staff everywhere! Your inspiration and care does not go unnoticed!
