Springtime Comes to the Garden

We celebrated the Spring Equinox on Saturday, at the river and Berteau, with fire, baked potatoes, songs in remembrance of those who passed away, and song for the new plants and bubs pushing their way into this beautiful world.
Tomorrow afternoon southerly winds are predicted, so we might try to burn the remainder of Waters Garden.

I have a new NEIU intern, Tilahun Gashaw. We will be working on new fencing all over the place: by Snake and Turtle, the bio-swale, the patio prairie.

We are also looking to install a tall, 20'?, net at the south side of the sports field to end the endless cycle of searching for balls and trampling plants. Please remind any kids you see to not sit on fencing, not beat each other with sticks, not tear branches from trees and shrubs, and in all other ways be little gentlemen and women.

Tuesday morning we will be finishing off the Mighty Acorns journal response starting after drop off. Anyone will to have a go is welcome to join us.

Once again 8th grade will be doing garden tasks on Thursday and Friday at 1:15 p,m,. Join us to get compost moved, an arbor built and more fencing installed.

Warm Week Ahead

Dear Friends,

Warm wet weather should bring on the first flowers of spring.
Will we be able to burn? Not this week.
Maybe next.

On Tuesday we will be doing Mighty Acorns journal response, from drop off, until we drop off. We had a great time last week with 5 responders knocking out 2 classrooms.

On Thursday and Friday at 1:15, 8th grade will return to the garden for many maintenance tasks. Supervision is Super. Join us.

On our 7th grade Winter Lake trip we always produce a "collective poem", an amalgam of all the students' phrases describing the Lake, the Sky, the City, the Shore, on that particular day. Here is the result for Room 202:

Montrose Point ~ Winter 2016
Room 202

Lake
The ice breathes with the waves
It breathes like a man laying down in bed
A dead body
A horrible future
Seismic
Chaos
Shattered
Like a war went on
Like Antartica
Ice scattered like puzzle pieces, unsolved
White spears,
Spiked like a Mohawk
White like a ghost
Moving like a breath
Slabs of ice break and glide away
A shield

Sky
A giant threw a blue tarp over the world
Blue like Julio’s shoes
A light blue dream
Spotless as a waxed floor
Painful scratches on the sky’s face
The sun, a huge signal flare
Marshmallow clouds in the distance
Still, like life.

City
Shadowy figures
Rigid like ice
Still as a person in a coma
Metal shapes emerging from the frozen earth
A rigid grey roller coaster
The blade of a saw
A caterpillar
Fingers reaching from the ground
Standing tall
Dominos ready to fall
A darkened cloud upon a beautiful body of water

Bare trees stand in front of buildings like tumbleweed through an abandoned town. A million dollars
The city is for people with money

Shore
A battlefield
Deserted as the Moon
Shards of shiny knives
The ice popped like popcorn
The ground like bad acne
Fragile as an expensive vase
Crystal powder
Glitter
A pillow
A frozen waterfall
Slick like fur
