When does the Program start?
Waters implemented a Health Education program to all students in grades K-8 starting in April, 2014. Chicago Public Schools is mandating this curriculum for all students, grades K-8. Parents will be notified ahead of time when the unit will be taught in the 2014-15 school year.
Can I opt my child out?
Parents wishing to opt their child (ren) out may do so before the Program begins, a form will be sent home. Students who wish to opt out of the program should bring a book (or books) to school to quietly read, or they may use the time to work on pending classwork or study (in a separate room) while the rest of their class participates in the program. The program will be implemented during the students Science class.
How will I know what to expect?
A letter with more specific information will go out to parents prior to the program start, so parents may talk to their child beforehand about these sensitive topics.
Will the program be taught co-ed, or separately?
All classes will be taught inclusively with both boys and girls. However, in the 4th and 5th grades there are a few lessons that are gender specific, i.e. hygiene, puberty, menstruation, etc. During these lessons, classes will be split up between boys and girls. In addition, some 4th grade material, specifically Puberty, will also be included in the 5th grade curriculum. Traditionally this material was introduced in the 5th and it is now introduced in the 4th grade. So to ensure that the 5th grade does not miss out on this important information our teachers will also deliver the content to our 5th graders.
Waters Administration invites Between Friends to implement an 8 week curriculum with our 7th and 8th grade students. Between Friends goal is to educate and facilitate conversation regarding Teen Dating, Breaking Up, Bullying, Healthy Relationships, Domestic Abuse, etc. If you would like to learn more about this organization please visit: http://www.betweenfriendschicago.org
