7TH – 8TH GRADES (MIDDLE SCHOOL)
Waters 7th and 8th grades are departmentalized. Each of the five teachers specialize in a particular Core Area.
Our Middle School Program is designed to prepare students for high school and college. Middle School is departmentalized for the Core Subjects. Each student participates in Executive Functioning, which helps to develop organizational skills that are necessary for high school and beyond. Waters now offers High School Algebra I. Upon completion of the course and a passing score on the exit exam, students will receive high school credit for Algebra I and will take Sophomore Mathematics as Freshmen. In Reading, the students are placed into differentiated groups; the groups may vary depending on the skill that is being taught. Typically, the 8th Grade participates in Buddy Reading with the Kindergartners.
Seventh graders take a trip to Springfield, IL, and the eighth graders travel to Washington D.C. for their class trip. The parents have been monumental in fundraising for these trips which have allowed more students to participate. Read more here.
Seventh graders spend the year studying Lake Michigan with various trips to Montrose Point throughout the year. The eighth graders are responsible for composting the waste from lunch for the entire school each day. They also have a year-long project in which they give a gift back to the Water's Garden. Some examples include: the cold frames, building benches, painting the fences, digging holes for the fence posts, planting flowers, etc.
All middle schoolers complete a science experimental research project in the fall with the opportunity to participate in school, network, and city science fairs.
Besides the CPS core academic curriculum (Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Writing), Waters students receive instruction in the following ancillary subjects:
Music - once a week
Drama - once a week
Art & Technology: These 2 subjects are all taught as studio-sized half classes (14:1) for more in-depth concepting on projects:

Phys Ed - once a week
Math Enrichment - once a week
Ecology - as an extension to the science curriculum, Kinder students enjoy 3 field trips in the garden for deeper study of grade-specific environmental subjects. Hands-on learning in this subject also occurs in or outside of class if it is applicable to the science unit being studied.
